Prof. Pei Zhao from Zhejiang University (Hangzhou, China) visited UCSU "Modern Nanotechnologies" from 21 to 24 January 2016. Zhejiang University is in the TOP-5 of best universities in China and is one of the oldest.
An association agreement in the field of development of ferroelectrics and piezoelectrics of graphene-based systems till 2020 has been signed between UCSU MN and Institute of Applied Mechanics of Zhejiang University. The agreement includes exchange of students, mutual visits of staff for investigations, joint publications and participation of international conferences.
Prof. Pei Zhao reported to the staff of UCSU MN the last achievements in the field of synthesis of graphene - a monoatomic layers of carbon atoms. Nobel laureates Geim and Novoselov (our countryman) produced graphene by mechanical exfoliation - separation of carbon single layers from graphite surface. This method is used now in laboratory research only. Carbon deposition at metallic substrate allows to produce graphene of large area, but with large amount of defects, and therefore its physical properties appears to be far from those predicted theoretically.
Prof. Pei Zhao with colleagues used ethanol as a precursor, and this allow them to produce graphene up to 3 in.2 with low defect concentration, thus opening ways for developing new microelectronic devices with record characteristics.
